Sarasota Memorial Healthcare Foundation recently awarded seven grants totaling $710,035. Five of the grants were awarded to Sarasota Memorial Health Care System in the areas of Women and Children’s Services, Critical Care, Mother-Baby and Neonatal Intensive Care. Two other grants were awarded to Epilepsy Services of Southwest Florida and First 1,000 Days Sarasota County through the Charles & Margery Barancik Foundation.

“The Healthcare Foundation remains committed to bringing world-class care to our entire community and these grants support that mission,” said Healthcare Foundation President Mason Ayres.

The five grants awarded to Sarasota Memorial Health Care System total $437,635.

“The support we receive from the Healthcare Foundation helps us provide the highest level of care to our community, today and into the future,” said Sarasota Memorial Health Care System CEO David Verinder. “For that, we are very grateful.”

Some of the latest grants included:

  • Critical Care Equipment: More than $123,000 will go towards purchasing Thermogard equipment, used on post-cardiac arrest patients to prevent brain injury, a FujiFilm Sonosite Ultrasound, a bedside tool that allows patients to stay in their own rooms for placement of treatment lines, and a CRRT Prismaflex machine commonly used for patients requiring bedside dialysis.
  • Hearing Screening Machines for Newborns: The Healthcare Foundation granted SMH $38,500 to replace the current machines with new state-of-the-art equipment. Newborn hearing screenings can detect hearing loss within the first few days after birth, preventing issues with speech and language development.
  • First 1,000 Days Sarasota County: A Healthcare Foundation grant of $250,000 will be part of a countywide initiative to increase access to care for low-income pregnant mothers and babies. Specifically, this grant will help support the Patient Navigator Program, guiding mothers and families through the medical, emotional and wellness services offered pre-pregnancy through the developmental years. The program was launched by the Charles & Margery Barancik Foundation after learning that half of the babies born in Sarasota County are born to families living in poverty.
  • Epilepsy Services of Southwest Florida: The Healthcare Foundation awarded $22,400 to help raise awareness of medical services and case management offered to uninsured adults with epilepsy. Improving and increasing the availability of this information will help reduce visits to Sarasota Memorial’s Emergency Care Centers and improve patient quality of life.
