Physician Research
The attraction of top flight medical talent to Sarasota is the combination of many factors, not the least of which is a world-class hospital that can support their practice of medicine. But for many physicians, research remains an important interest and passion that requires support and guidance.
The Center for Independent Physician Research, launched in Fall 2011 and funded by Sarasota Memorial Healthcare Foundation, is providing the infrastructure and assistance for the growing number of physicians interested in conducting independent research. Patients benefit from improved data-driven clinical practice and the publication of research papers.
Through its clinical research department, SMH has been successfully conducting clinical trials for major pharmaceutical companies and device manufacturers for many years, and in several cases, is the #1 enroller of patients in the US.
Since the inception of the Center for Independent Physician Research, the Healthcare Foundation has provided grants for:
- A COPD Research Study
- A new research nurse, who helps the physicians design trials and gather data.
- Employee wellness research program and software development that will collect data from employees that can be implemented community wide.
